Can the Blue Tide calm the Red Fury? Men’s T20 Intra-Squad Series

April 13, 2026

After the success of the 50 over Men’s High-Performance camp in April last year, La Manga will again play host at the end of this week to an intra-squad competition, this time a T20 series in preparation for the August ICC World Cup qualifiers in Helsinki. Following the Netherlands’ withdrawal from the planned international matches, the Spain management team had no hesitation in setting up a second edition of the Juan Carlos Rodgriguez Trophy pitting the best players in Spain against each other.

‘La Marea Azul’ led by Spain Coach, Corey Rutgers, will be captained by Yasir Ali with Lorne Burnsas his vice-captain, and their opponents will be Assistant Coach, Alistair Priddle’s, ‘La Furia Roja’ captained by Chris Munoz Mills with Daniel Doyle Calle deputising.

The explosive batter and keeper, Lee Rimmer, from Costa del Sol, is the only new addition to the talented group of players who have represented Spain over the last couple of years, and Corey is delighted with the strength of the squad available and excited about the upcoming five-match series; ‘I’m very much looking forward to the second Juan Carlos trophy as the players really enjoyed the challenge of going against in each in the 50 over games last year really raised the competitive juices. Looking to do it in a T20 format at the moment builds on the success of the 5-0 series victory against Croatia in December and focuses on the T20s coming up in the next 6 to 8 months with the August ICC qualifiers for the World Cup around the corner.’

With lots of competition for places, particularly in terms of bowling, Corey is looking at identifying key roles in the side: ‘It is great to have lots of familiar faces making the trip to La Manga, and as we go back to T20 mode, with the middle order pretty set, we are looking particularly at trying a few things in the opening positions and at the bowlers fighting for very few spots. It’s always exciting to bring over the UK-based players and also mix that with our local talent and Chris, Dani, Yasir and Lorne will be very busy as leaders. I’m very thankful to the ECN who are going to be live-streaming the games; we have a great relationship with ECN and it’s excellent that people will be able to tune in to what should a fiercely competitive and very useful five-match series.’

With the T20 International rankings due to be released in the next month and both T20I and 50 over matches on the horizon, this weekend is the start of another exciting year for Spain cricket.

The five-matchseries will take place between Friday 17th and Sunday 19thApril at La Manga Club.
